The sun already high in the skies of Southern Africa,
Sun-kissed skins are starting to show, and bikini bodies are revealing themselves… but another important aspect of summer is keeping your make up smudge and sweat proof all day! So, today I am sharing with you some tips to achieve great-looking summer makeup.
So, let’s go!
(This includes preparation)
Firstly, and this is a MUST, you have to moisturise your skin and APPLY SUNSCREEN!
Secondly after moisturising the skin, concealer can be applied. For those of you who don’t know the difference between concealer and foundation, here is a simple explanation. A foundation is the product that you apply across the whole facial area to even out skin tone. Whereas a concealer is the product that is used to cover more significant blemishes such as dark circles. If you feel the need to apply a concealer before the foundation, here is a basic guide on what to use:
- green concealer on red marks
- orange concealer on dark circles
- purple concealer on pigmentation marks
Then apply an even layer of your foundation to the entire face, and be sure to thoroughly blend your foundation into your hairline and under the jaw line. After the foundation application, it is time to set the foundation. The best product (according to me) is a translucent powder, as it does not affect the colour of the foundation. I also prefer to also use a loose translucent powder, as it does not stick to your face as a set powder does.
Choose your three colours that you would like to apply, the colours should be in shades of light, medium and dark.
Apply the lightest colour on the whole of your eyelid especially underneath your eyebrows and in the inner corner of your eyes, this will serve the purpose of a highlighter. The medium shade can be applied to the crease of your eye and must be blended in well with a blending brush. Now apply the darkest colour to the outer corner of your eye and blend to the crease of your eyes. If you can’t decide on which colours to use, visit our previous blog to see which colours best suits your eyes.
Use a liquid eyeliner/cake eyeliner to line the top if your eyelids. Now use a cake eyeliner/pencil eyeliner and line the lower lid below the eyelashes. Line only the outer two-thirds of the lower lid, or all the way across if you’re trying to achieve a darker look
For this step you can either use an eyebrow powder or pencil. Choose a colour that suits your natural eyebrow colour or 1 shade darker. Fill your eyebrows with a slanted make up brush then comb through to blend the powder or pencil. See a more detailed explanation in our previous blog on eyebrows.
Apply two-three coats of mascara to your upper lashes and one coat of mascara on your lower lashes.
For a great summer make up look you can choose bold, bright or even nude colors. Use a lip liner to line your lips and then apply lipstick to achieve a beautiful bold full lip. (Remember to carry your lipstick in your purse for in case you need a touch-up later in the evening.)
Tip: To make your eyes stand out use a white/silver shimmer or even a pencil and apply it in the inner corner of your eyes and beneath your eyebrows.
